Buterin says he’s no longer aligned with group funded by SHIB gift

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said Friday that he is no longer aligned with the Future of Life Institute (FLI), an organization that previously received Shiba Inu (SHIB) tokens from him in 2021.

Buterin explained that the institute’s direction has shifted since the donation was made.

According to him, the organization’s current focus differs from the broader strategy originally presented when he supported the group.

The Future of Life Institute had received the tokens during a period when developers sent large quantities of meme coins, including SHIB and other dog-themed tokens, to Buterin’s wallet.

Some projects used his public wallet address as part of their marketing campaigns.

Buterin later redirected portions of those tokens to charities and research organizations.

The Future of Life Institute was among the recipients.

He said the organization initially outlined a plan focused on reducing global existential risks.

The roadmap included risks tied to artificial intelligence, biology and nuclear threats, as well as initiatives promoting peace and better knowledge sharing.

According to Buterin, those objectives helped motivate his decision to donate SHIB tokens to the institute.

Concerns over shift toward political advocacy on AI

Buterin said that the institute later shifted its focus toward cultural and political advocacy related to artificial intelligence risks, which he described as a different approach from the strategy originally presented.

“My worry is that large-scale coordinated political action with big money pools is a thing that can easily lead to unintended outcomes,” Buterin wrote.

He added that such initiatives could trigger public backlash and produce fragile solutions.

Buterin also warned that large coordinated efforts could potentially become authoritarian even if they were not intended that way.

The Future of Life Institute describes its mission as reducing extreme risks and guiding transformative technologies to benefit humanity.

On its website, the organization states that policies are needed to ensure artificial intelligence development benefits society broadly rather than primarily increasing corporate profits.

“We need policies to help ensure that AI development improves lives everywhere – rather than merely boosts corporate profits,” the organization says.

However, Buterin expressed concerns about certain policy proposals associated with emerging technologies.

Some of the proposals include implementing safeguards in biosynthesis devices and AI models that would prevent them from generating harmful outputs.

Buterin argued that such technical restrictions may be unreliable.

“I view this as a very fragile solution: there are many ways to jailbreak, fine-tune or otherwise get around such restrictions,” he said.

SHIB donation eventually converted into $500 million

Buterin also discussed the eventual value of the Shiba Inu tokens donated to the institute.

In 2021, he received large quantities of SHIB and other meme tokens as developers attempted to leverage his reputation for publicity.

While redistributing those assets to charitable causes, Buterin said he did not expect the donated tokens to generate such a large financial outcome.

“I thought that surely they would cash out at most $10-25M, because there’s no way the SHIB market is deep enough to cash out more,” he wrote.

However, the institute reportedly converted around $500 million worth of SHIB tokens.

The donation ultimately became one of the largest crypto-linked charitable contributions.

In June 2021, the Future of Life Institute announced a $25 million multi-year grant program supported by funds from Buterin and the Shiba Inu community.

The program aimed to fund research and initiatives focused on global risks and emerging technologies.
