According to a report by The Washington Examiner, U.S. Border Patrol agents near the southern border no longer have the drive and support needed to care about their jobs.
According to multiple agents, morale within the ranks of the law enforcement organization is declining. But animosity from the Biden administration is to blame for completely draining their last bit of purpose.
“Under Biden, things are the worst they have ever been by far,” one agent told the news source. “Agents are calling in all the time. You always hear, ‘It doesn’t matter,’ or, ‘What’s the point?’ in reference to doing our job. Agents are afraid of ending up on the news for doing their job or getting in trouble for doing their job. There is no morale.”
Multiple agents anonymously spoke with The Washington Examiner to protect their jobs and described the struggles facing the officers at the southern border.
The agents noted that the most significant factor in the Border Patrol’s pessimism was the feeling that Biden has demonized agents for enforcing immigration laws that lawmakers like him passed in Congress.
Biden was quick to condemn agents last September over reports that a mounted agent allegedly “whipped” a Haitian migrant trying to enter the United States.
One agent noted the administration’s response, including the lack of an investigation into the Border Patrol whipping incident, has been a “major morale killer.”
“All they have done is basically stomped on us from the get-go. And they’ve condemned us on every turn,” the agent said. “People are pretty much fed up with how this administration is treating Border Patrol agents because all we’ve been doing this whole time is what they’ve told us to do, which is really bad policy.”
The failing morale of agents comes during the most significant migration event in U.S. history.
Since Biden took office in January 2021, the number of migrants arrested while trying to sneak into the United States or denied entry has tripled, surpassing 200,000 encounters per month on numerous occasions.
Over 2 million migrants were stopped while trying to illegally enter the U.S. from Mexico in 2021. About 1.1 million were immediately deported back to Mexico or flown to other countries. However, nearly 800,000 have been released into the U.S.
When Biden took office, he immediately halted deportations for 100 days, suspended border wall construction, and vowed to rescind initiatives that turned away asylum-seekers at the nation’s borders.
