Liz Cheney, one of two Republicans on the unconstitutionally assembled January rebuked GOP voters for their support of former President Donald Trump on Sunday.
“We can either be loyal to Donald Trump or we can be loyal to the Constitution, but we cannot be both. And right now, there are far too many Republicans who are trying to enable the former president, embrace the former president, look the other way and hope that the former president goes away, trying to obstruct the activities of this committee,” Cheney argued on CBS’s Face The Nation. “But we won’t be deterred. At the end of the day, the facts matter, and the truth matters.”
The Wisconsin congresswoman and vice-chair of the House Select Committee repeatedly claimed Trump is “dangerous” and vowed to assure he will never return to the White House.
“We are in a situation where people have got to understand the danger of President Trump and the danger he posed that day,” she said. “This is a man who has demonstrated that he is at war with the rule of law. He has demonstrated that he is willing to blow through every guard rail of democracy. And he can never be anywhere near the Oval Office again. He has demonstrated a complete lack of fitness for office.”
Trump and his base’s insistence that the election was rigged “undermines the democratic process” Cheney argued.
“As a nation, we’ve got to be founded on the rule of law. We’ve got to be founded on fidelity to the Constitution,” she said. “We had individuals at the Department of Justice before Jan. 6 who stood up to the president who said, ‘Absolutely not, we will not claim that this election was stolen,’ who told him the truth. And we had local officials in the party, the Republican Party, who did the same.
“People all across the country, they need to recognize how important their vote is, how important their voice is. They’ve got to elect serious people who are going to defend the Constitution, not simply do the bidding of Donald Trump.”
Cheney’s insistence that the committee is devoted to the constitution and truth are brazen, outright lies.
The sham panel has unconstitutionally subpoenaed the private phone records of its witnesses, including nine Republican colleagues and over a hundred private citizens. The sweeping acquisition of personal correspondence undermines civil liberties and sets a dangerous precedent paving the way for elected officials to spy on all Americans.
After illegally acquiring the private data and correspondence of its witnesses, the committee desperately attempted to frame Republican leadership with conspiring an “insurrection” by doctoring former White House Chief of Staff’s Mark Meadow’s text messages and even admitted to creating fake text exchanges between Rep. Jim Jordan and Meadows.
The sham panel itself is unconstitutionally assembled and is facing several lawsuits that include complaints over its hyper-partisan, unauthorized composition which defies House Rules.
According to House Resolution 503, which established the select committee, the panel must consist of thirteen members of the House, and “five must be appointed after consultation with the minority leader.” Defying House rules, Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed just nine members to the Select Committee, seven Democrats and two Republicans. None of these members was appointed from the selection of five GOP Congresspersons put forth by Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy or “after consultation with the minority member.
Cheney assumes Americans are stupid and can’t see through the lies. But her days in Congress are numbered.
