In 2019, fired FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe admitted he opened a counterintelligence investigation into President Trump in May 2017 shortly after Trump fired Comey as FBI Director.
McCabe was investigating whether Trump was ‘acting as an agent of Russia.’
McCabe also opened a criminal investigation into Trump for possible obstruction of justice for firing Comey.
“I was speaking to the man who had just run for the presidency, and won the election for the presidency, and who might have done so with the aid of the government of Russia, our most formidable adversary on the world stage and that was something that troubled me greatly,” McCabe said in a 60 Minutes interview in February 2019.
“I think the next day, I met with the team investigating the Russia cases, and I asked the team to go back and conduct an assessment to determine where are we with these efforts and what steps do we need to take going forward,” he added.
“I was very concerned that I was able to put the Russia case on absolutely solid ground in an indelible fashion that were I removed quickly or reassigned or fired, that the case could not be closed or vanish in the night without a trace,” McCabe told host Scott Pelley. “I wanted to make sure that our case was on solid ground, and if somebody came in behind me and closed it and tried to walk away from it, they were not be able to do that without creating a record why they’d made that decision.”
According to the New York Times, the investigation into whether Trump was a Russian agent was then handed over to Robert Mueller upon his appointment on May 17th, 2017, about one week after the President fired Comey.
Comey previously told lawmakers in a closed-door deposition in December 2018 that Andrew McCabe and then-DAG Rod Rosenstein (who plotted to wear a wire and oust Trump via the 25th Amendment) opened up an obstruction of justice inquiry into Trump after the President fired Comey, however, news of the counter-intel investigation was not previously known to the public until the New York Times reported the story in January 2019.
McCabe confirmed the explosive New York Times report on Rosenstein’s plans to wear a wire during his “60 Minutes” interview.
McCabe said in his “60 Minutes” interview that top DOJ officials were so worried over President Trump’s decision to fire corrupt Comey as FBI Director that they discussed invoking the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office in several different meetings.

According to investigative reporter Paul Sperry, there is an Electronic Communication formally opening the CI investigation into Trump in May 2017.
Sperry said the highly classified document dated in early May 2017 was written by Peter Strzok at the direction of Andrew McCabe.
